Bilingual resources are excellent tools; they provide information on specific subjects and help our families become familiar with the terminology in both languages. In addition, these resources help facilitate communication with healthcare providers, educators, academics, police, supermarket, and many others that want to inform our community. ALMA provides written translation services from English to Spanish as well as Spanish to English. Recently, we have expanded our services to cover translations in other languages, such as French, Arabic, Chinese, and Korean. Our Approach
- Culture and language.
When doing culturally and linguistically appropriate translations, ALMA considers of great importance the following:
- The cultural correspondence of the terms and concepts as they relate to the values, beliefs, and norms. These vary in different populations.
- The language correspondence. Words and grammar have different meanings in different cultures and languages. We focus on translating the meaning not just the words. The Hispanic community in the U.S. is very diverse in terms of education, language proficiency in English and Spanish, socio-economic status, and approaches to health, for example. In doing the translation we keep in mind the target population and although we follow the target language rules, we also maintain a flexible approach to help the reader better connect and understand the messages. For example, the abbreviation “CPR” is widely used and better understood than “RCP” as it is in Spanish.
Our Translation Process
ALMA guarantees the quality of our translations by following these steps:
- Research the subject and vocabulary of the document for translation.
- Identify the target population.
- Develop a Style Manual to respond to the client’s specifications, as needed.
- Translate and adapt documents.
- Conduct team proofreading, including revision for grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and formatting.
- Involve the client and ask questions when in doubt.
- Return the final translated document on or before the due date.
